Josef Beran (born Dec. 29, 1888, Plzen, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary—died May 17, 1969, Rome, Italy) was the Roman Catholic archbishop of Prague (1946), made a cardinal in 1965. He was interned in 1949 by the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia after members of the clergy were forbidden to participate in political life. He was released in 1965 and left Czechoslovakia.
