BIOGRAPHY

Justin Welby became Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the Anglican Communion in 2013.

Born in London in 1956, he was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied history and law. For 11 years—five in Paris and six in London—he worked in the oil industry; his booklet, Can Companies Sin?, drew on this corporate experience and evolved from his dissertation at theological college.

He has been Bishop of Durham, Dean of Liverpool Cathedral, and Canon of Coventry Cathedral, whose international reconciliation work he led for five years. He has long blended deep devotion to his parish communities with Church work around the world, especially in areas of conflict.

As Archbishop of Canterbury, he set three priorities for his ministry: a renewal of prayer and religious communities across the Church; supporting churches and Christians to be agents of reconciliation and peace-making in places of conflict; and encouraging and inspiring Christians to share their faith.

When we look around us, often the world does not feel like a safe place to live in. We are rightly outraged by the ubiquity of violence and war. The reality is, however, that tremendous efforts are being made globally to bring an end to violent conflict; in many places, societies are much safer…

We are also called to share the Truth, which is God’s love for us in Jesus Christ.\n“[Jesus] asks us not to fix our gaze on what divides us, but rather on what unites us, seeking to know and love Jesus better and to share the richness of his love,” Pope Francis writes in Diverse yet United:...

Reimagining Britain: Foundations for Hope
Reimagining Britain: Foundations for Hope (May 2018)
By Justin Welby
In a time of political turbulence, and as the Welfare State totters under the strain in a country that has changed dramatically since 1945, Archbishop Justin Welby sets out to identify the values that will enable us to reimagine, and to enact, a more hopeful future.\nThe thesis is that the work of reimagining is as great as it was in 1945, and will happen either by accident – and thus badly – or deliberately. The author draws on Britain's history and Christian tradition to identify this...

Dethroning Mammon: Making Money Serve Grace: The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book 2017 (January 2017)
By Justin Welby
In his first full-length book Justin Welby looks at the subject of money and materialism. Designed for study in the weeks of Lent leading up to Easter, Dethroning Mammon reflects on the impact of our own attitudes, and of the pressures that surround us, on how we handle the power of money, called Mammon in this book. Who will be on the throne of our lives? Who will direct our actions and attitudes? Is it Jesus Christ, who brings truth, hope and freedom? Or is it Mammon, so attractive, so...

Archbishop Justin Welby: Risk-taker and Reconciler
Archbishop Justin Welby: Risk-taker and Reconciler (June 2014)
By Andrew Atherstone
When the search for a new Archbishop of Canterbury began, Justin Welby had been a bishop for only four and a half months. He had little media profile and barely figured in the early speculations about Rowan Williams' successor. Welby claimed that it would be 'a joke' and 'perfectly absurd' to appoint him because he had such little episcopal experience. The Crown Nominations Commission disagreed and in March 2013 he was enthroned as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury. This, the first major biography...
