BIOGRAPHY

Richard Godden teaches American Literature in the Department of American Studies at the University of Sussex. He has published Fictions of Capital: The American Novel from James to Mailer (1990), and Fictions of Labor: William Faulkner and the South's Long Revolution (1997). He is also a contributor to 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die (2012), where an earlier version of this Britannica entry first appeared.
