When to Use 'Advice' and 'Advise'

Question
What is the difference between 'advice' and 'advise'? — P. B., India
Answer

'Advice' is a noun meaning "an opinion or suggestion about what someone should do." Advice is a noncount noun (or mass noun) which means it does not have a plural form. 'Advise' is a verb meaning "to give an opinion or suggestion to someone about what should be done" or "to give advice to (someone)." Below are examples of how each word is used.

Advice (noun):

  • I asked my mother for advice about salary negotiation.
  • His friend went to him for advice about buying a house.
  • She got a lot of good/useful advice at the writer's workshop.

Advise (verb):

  • I advised my students to read the syllabus.
  • The coach advises rest on days after games.
  • They advise their children to always act with kindness and compassion.

I hope this helps.
