Material and matériel

Question
What's the difference between material and matériel?
Answer

Material ending in –al is a common word with several different meanings. All of the meanings are connected by the idea of “stuff that you use to do or make something.” Here is the entry from the Merriam Webster Learner's Dictionary:

material
1 a substance from which something is made or can be made

  • Building materials have become much more expensive.

2 something used in doing a particular activity

  • She always brings reading material on the train.

3 cloth or fabric

  • You’ll need three yards of material.

4 information or ideas

  • He has been gathering material for a new biography.

Matériel with an accent over the first e and ending in –el has a single meaning, and it is a much less common word. You may also see it written without the accent. As you can see from the dictionary entry below, it is used mainly in the context of military operations.

matériel
equipment and supplies, usually for the military

  • The soldiers on the mission returned safely, but a lot of matériel was lost or damaged.

I hope this helps.
