Ways to improve your English
Answer

Question

A number of readers have asked for suggestions about ways to improve their English.

Answer

Here are some suggestions:

  • Visit our website, www.LearnersDictionary.com, and follow the link to the Ask the Editor column. Each week there are several new lessons in grammar and vocabulary, based on questions submitted by users.
  • Also at www.LearnersDictionary.com, sign up for the Word of the Day, and a new word will come to you in an email message every day.
  • Look for the Merriam-Webster Learner's Dictionary mobile app, coming soon!
  • Listen to English songs that you like and search for their lyrics (words) on the Web. They’re easy to find if you do a search for the name of the song in quotes, followed by the word lyrics. For example, do a search for:

“Rolling in the Deep” lyrics

Then you can read the lyrics, study the vocabulary, and understand the song better.

  • Watch movies and news programs in English on the Internet. Look for websites that give you the option to read subtitles while you watch. Then you can read and listen at the same time.
  • Take an English course online, or at a local college or community center.
  • Talk to you people you know who speak English, whether they're native speakers or not.
  • This last one will sound a little strange, but it works: Talk to yourself in English! Even if no one is listening, you’ll be practicing pronouncing words and forming sentences.

Good Luck!
