Answer

Question

What is the difference between "girl" and "daughter"?  – Mohammad, Iran

Answer

Girl

The noun girl means any female person who is not old enough to be considered a woman. It can be used to refer to any young female person, and it does not tell anything about her parents. Girl is the feminine equivalent of boy.

Here is an example that shows how girl is used:

The girl was carrying a bag of oranges.

(The person carrying oranges is a young female. We do not know who her parents are, and it does not matter in this context.)

Daughter

The noun daughter is used to talk about a female person of any age, when identifying the mother and/or father of this female person. Daughter is the feminine equivalent of son.

Here is an example that shows how daughter is used:

I have a daughter named Christine.

(In this example, the speaker is the mother or father of a female named Christine. We do not know how old Christine is. She could be a child, a teenager, or an adult.)

I hope this helps.
