In the 1980s Nintendo hoped to produce a video game based on Popeye the Sailor Man. When the deal with Popeye’s copyright holders fell through, video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto changed the loutish bully Bluto into the large ape Donkey Kong and changed Popeye into Jumpman (later renamed Mario).
