During the struggle for freedom from the United Kingdom, Indians used a flag with the same color stripes as is used today but featured a spinning wheel, a device used to make yarn and thread, which was a symbol of self-reliance. In India’s current flag, that spinning wheel has been replaced by the Dharma Chakra (“Wheel of the Law”).
