In the early 1800s, miners flooded into Wisconsin to extract its valuable lead deposits. Rather than live in houses, many stayed in dens dug into hillsides, earning them the nickname “badgers." Wisconsin is now “the Badger State,” with both a miner and the animal on its flag.
