Tetsuya Fujita, who developed the Fujita scale used to classify the intensity of tornadoes, once avoided catastrophe thanks to bad weather. He lived in Kokura, Japan, during World War II. The primary target for the U.S.’s second atomic bomb, Kokura was obscured by clouds on the day of the planned attack, and the bombers chose the secondary target, Nagasaki.
