A mid-19th-century ruler of Siam, King Mongkut, had good relations with the United States. When he heard that the U.S. had no elephants, he offered to send a pair to fill the land with their offspring. President Lincoln declined, saying his nation’s landscape and climate did not “favor the multiplication of the elephant.”
