The mother of Abdullah II, the current king of Jordan, is a British woman born Toni Gardiner. When Hussein, the previous king, met her, she was a secretarial assistant on the film Lawrence of Arabia. Because their marriage was unpopular in Jordan, the king did not make her a queen, instead giving her the title Muna al-Hussein, “the king’s desire.”
