In 1971 a newly completed particle accelerator at Fermilab was malfunctioning. The culprit was thought to be metal shavings left in tubes that were miles long and too narrow for a human to fit into. Scientists cleaned these tubes by purchasing a ferret, fitting it with a harness to drag along a swab, and sending it down the tubes. The ferret, named Felicia, was also fitted with a diaper to prevent making the mess worse.
