In the 19th century many corsets were made of “whalebone” that was in fact dried baleen. (Baleen is the keratin plates that some whales have instead of teeth, which they use to filter plankton out of water.) Baleen is flexible yet strong, ideal for providing structure in clothing (and also in riding crops, hat brims, and umbrellas).
