Squirrels were once incredibly rare in U.S. urban areas. In 1856 the sight of one in a New York City tree was written about in a newspaper (the commotion-causing squirrel was in fact an escaped pet). Squirrels were reintroduced en masse to bring more “nature” to city parks.
