Expanding their mother’s business, German brothers Theo and Karl Albrecht founded the supermarket chain Aldi in 1946. After a quarrel over the sale of cigarettes, the brothers split the business into Aldi Nord (north) and Aldi Süd (south). Every Aldi store in the United States is run by Aldi Süd. Meanwhile, Aldi Nord moved into the U.S. market by buying Trader Joe’s in 1979.
