The powerful Medici family were patrons of Michelangelo until a popular uprising banished them from Florence in 1527. The artist remained in the city and helped design fortifications. The Medicis were furious that he appeared to side with the people who had ousted them. When they returned to power in 1530, Pope Clement VII, who was a Medici, ordered Michelangelo’s death. The artist was forced into hiding, but after two months the death sentence was rescinded.
