Before the 19th century the Cherokee language was primarily spoken, not written. In the early 1800s Cherokee leader Sequoyah believed written language gave white people a considerable advantage and started creating written language for the Cherokee. By the 1830s the literacy rate among the Cherokee was estimated to be 90 percent, comparable to or higher than that of white settlers of the time.
