In 1954 Israel joined the Asian Football Conference, a seemingly sensible placement given its geographical location. However, many Muslim states refused to play against them, allowing Israel to win a qualifying round of the World Cup without playing a single game. Israel won the 1964 AFC Asian Cup after 11 of 16 participants dropped out. Israel today competes in the Union of European Football Associations.
