During the 1912 Olympic Games, Jim Thorpe won the pentathlon by placing first in four of the five events. During the three-day decathlon a week later, his shoes went missing, thought to have been taken by jealous competitors. Thorpe’s coach scrounged up a pair of mismatched shoes, which Thorpe wore on his way to his second gold.
