In 1979 an agitated rabbit, hissing and baring its teeth, swam up to President Jimmy Carter’s boat while he was fishing in Georgia. Rabbits typically don’t swim, but this large “swamp rabbit” was thought to be on the run from a predator. Carter shooed away the animal with a paddle, but the idea of the leader of the free world being attacked by a bunny took root in the public consciousness, damaging his reputation.
