During the U.S. Civil War, ships with heavy iron or steel plating called “ironclads” were used by both sides. As the war progressed, the Confederacy ran low on resources and began using 500-pound bales of cotton to armor some vessels. These “cottonclads” helped the Confederacy retake Galveston, Texas, from the Union.
