In the Middle Ages the people who lived in modern-day Croatia would often barter using pelts of wood martens, a small weasel-like mammal. When Croatia became its own country, the people named their currency kuna, their word for the wood marten. When Croatia adopted the euro, they chose to put a marten design on their €1 coin.
