Famous for its ski slopes, Idaho’s Sun Valley Resort was developed in a fairly remote location by the Union Pacific Railroad in order to sell train tickets. To entice more people to ski, a Union Pacific engineer developed the modern chairlift. (Previous methods for skiers to get to the top of a mountain included hiking up or using a rope tow.)
