After the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States issued special currency to be used in Hawaii. These bills resembled typical U.S. currency but had the word “HAWAII” printed in large block letters. In the event Hawaii was captured and the money fell into enemy hands, it could quickly be deemed non-legal tender.
