In 2024 PETA offered the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club a giant gold coin to free Punxsutawney Phil. Reasoning the large rodent’s ability to predict an early spring is no better than a coin flip, PETA said the gold coin could be used in his stead. The offer was not accepted.
