George Washington ran for a seat in a Virginia legislative assembly in 1755 and lost. Two years later he ran again, this time using booze to get votes, a common tactic of that era known as “swilling the planters with bumbo.” Washington’s campaign bought over a hundred gallons of beer, rum, and wine and got 307 votes, enough to win the seat.
