Before the electronic telegraph and Morse code, France had an extensive visual telegraph system. At its peak, the system consisted of 534 towers spread out over 3,000 miles. Each tower was within eyesight of the one before and after it, topped with large swinging metal arms that made shapes that corresponded to letters and words. Messages that would normally take days to deliver by horse took only hours.
