Adria, town and episcopal see in the Veneto regione of northern Italy, on the Bianco Canal just east of Rovigo. Founded by the Etruscans or the Veneti of northeastern Italy, it later became a Roman town and was a flourishing port on the Adriatic Sea (to which it gave its name) until the silting up of the Po and Adige deltas caused the sea (now 13.5 miles [22 km] east) to recede from the town. It has a fine museum of antiques and an 18th-century cathedral. It is now an agricultural and commercial centre of the Polesine (delta district), with diversified manufactures. Pop. (2006 est.) mun., 20,538.
