Tobol River, river, left-bank tributary of the Irtysh (Ertis) River, flowing through northern Kazakhstan into southern Russia. After rising in the low mountains of the Torghay Plateau, it flows northeast across the West Siberian Plain past the cities of Qostanay (Kazakhstan) and Kurgan (Russia) before entering the Irtysh River at Tobolsk after a course of 989 miles (1,591 km). Its main tributaries are the Ubagan River in the upper reaches and the Iset, Tura, and Tavda rivers in the lower reaches. It has a drainage basin of 164,500 square miles (426,000 square km). The Tobol is frozen from November to April, and high water occurs in spring. Its Karatamar Reservoir supplies water to the iron-ore industry of Rūdnyy in Kazakhstan.
