Aimorés Mountains, mountainous region divided between the estados (states) of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, eastern Brazil, occupying an area of about 3,900 square miles (10,100 square km). The mountains form a crystalline-hill upland with an average elevation of 3,000 feet (900 m). They are covered with semideciduous forest and are crossed by the São Mateus River and several smaller streams. The Doce River closely follows the mountainous region’s southwestern border. Mantena (Gabriel Emílio) is the principal town in the sparsely populated area.
