The Carol Burnett Show, American television variety and sketch comedy program comprising skits, musical comedy, and vaudeville-style performances by the eponymous Carol Burnett, members of her comedy troupe, and various guest stars. The Carol Burnett Show aired for 11 seasons (1967–78) on CBS and was a staple of the network’s Saturday-night lineup for most of that period.
Burnett’s cast of regulars included Lyle Waggoner (until 1974), Vicki Lawrence, Harvey Korman, and Tim Conway (first as a guest star, then as a regular after 1975). These entertainers combined the spontaneity and energy of live performance (including question-and-answer segments with the studio audience) with meticulous attention to detail and the advantages of two weekly tapings to create a hugely successful format. All Burnett’s artistic talents were on display, as she performed as a host, singer, actress, and comedian on each episode. Besides its slapstick comedy and musical numbers, the program was perhaps best known for its movie parodies such as “Went with the Wind” and “From Here to Maternity.” One of the show’s most popular skits, “The Family Sketch,” combined humour and drama in depicting a squabbling, dysfunctional working-class family, and it was later spun off into a network sitcom called Mama’s Family (1983–90), starring Lawrence. Burnett decided to end the show in 1978 to move on to other projects, although it remained in syndicated reruns for many years. The show was briefly revived on the National Broadcasting Co. (NBC) in 1979 as Carol Burnett & Company and again on CBS as The Carol Burnett Show in 1991, but neither incarnation lasted a full season.
The Carol Burnett Show was nominated for multiple Emmy Awards each year it was on the air and won more than 20 Emmys, as well as 8 Golden Globes, during its prime-time run. In 2016 Burnett published In Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox, a behind-the-scenes look at the show. Various reunion specials aired over the years, including The Carol Burnett Show: A Reunion (1993) and The Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special (2017).
