Darkhan
Darkhan, town, northern Mongolia, northwest of Ulaanbaatar. A large industrial complex, built in the late 1960s with Soviet and eastern European aid, makes Darkhan one of the largest industrial centres in Mongolia. A building-industry combine produces concrete, lime cement, bricks, and wood and steel products. Other industries include food processing, vehicle repair, and the production of woolen textiles, carpets, dressed sheepskins, and clothing. A power station, fueled by coal brought by rail from Sharyn Gol, 42 miles (68 km) to the north, supplies power for Sühbaatar and Ulaanbaatar as well as for local industry. Pop. (2010) 74,738.
