Deauville
Deauville, fashionable resort, Calvados département, Normandy région, northern France. It lies at the mouth of the Touques River, opposite Trouville, across the Seine estuary from Le Havre. It is 55 miles (89 km) west of Rouen by road and 128 miles (206 km) from Paris. The town was founded by the duc de Morny in 1860. Although first developed as a seaside resort, the renown of Deauville also owes much to its horse-racing tracks and related activities. The town is home to a casino, a marina, and a major conference centre, designed in part to diversify the tourism economy. Deauville is readily accessible by road, rail, and air. Pop. (1999) 4,364; (2014 est.) 3,725.
