Monte Alegre
Monte Alegre, town, west-central ParĂ¡ estado (state), northern Brazil. The adobe and stucco settlement sits on a hill rising out of the dense tropical rainforest on the left (north) bank of the Amazon River, about 55 miles (90 km) northeast of the city of SantarĂ©m. The cultivation of grains and sugarcane and the raising of cattle are the principal economic activities. There are deposits of jasper in the vicinity. Rubber, fish, and alcohol are shipped from the town. Pop. (2010) 55,459.
