Vilagarcía de Arousa

Vilagarcía de Arousa, city, Pontevedra provincia (province), in the comunidad autónoma (autonomous community) of Galicia, northwestern Spain. The city is a seaport just northwest of Pontevedra city, on the Arousa estuary. Fishing and boatbuilding are the chief industries, and exports include lumber and sardines. It is also a seaside resort, with beaches at Comba, Concha, and Compostela. The area contains Roman remains as well as the Rubianes manor house (16th century) and the palace and monastery of Vista Alegre (17th century). Vilagarcía takes its name from its former lords, the Garcías de Caamaño. Pop. (2008 est.) 18,934.
