Ameca

Ameca, city, west-central Jalisco estado (state), west-central Mexico. It lies on the upper Ameca River, on the western slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental, at 4,052 feet (1,235 metres) above sea level. Important since colonial days, Ameca is an agricultural, commercial, and industrial centre. Sugarcane and cereals flourish in the temperate climate. Cattle, pigs, and horses are widely raised. Apiculture, aviculture, and forestry are additional sources of income. Ameca can be reached by highway or railroad from Guadalajara, the state capital, about 50 miles (80 km) to the east. Ameca has an airfield. Pop. (2005) 35,047; (2010) 36,156.
