Sohano Island, coral islet in Buka Passage (the body of water that separates Buka and Bougainville islands), northern Solomon Islands archipelago, southwestern Pacific Ocean. It is part of the autonomous region of Bougainville within Papua New Guinea and served as the provincial capital for several decades after World War II. Sohano is accessible by boat from Buka. During the war it was occupied by the Japanese and used as a seaplane base; a memorial to Japanese soldiers who died in the Bougainville campaign stands on the island.
