Earth Spirit

Earth Spirit, drama in four acts by Frank Wedekind, published in 1895 as Der Erdgeist after his publisher refused the complete manuscript of Die Büchse der Pandora: Eine Monstretragödie (“Pandora’s Box: A Monster Tragedy”). Erdgeist was first performed in 1898.

Together with Die Büchse der Pandora (Pandora’s Box), the second part of the original work, Earth Spirit relates the experiences of Lulu, an amoral femme fatale. In Earth Spirit, Lulu’s first husband dies when he finds her with another man, her second husband kills himself, and she kills the third. She also ensnares the lesbian Countess Geschwitz.
