The Encantadas

The Encantadas, ten fictional sketches by Herman Melville, published in 1854 in Putnam’s Monthly Magazine as “The Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles,” under the pseudonym Salvator R. Tarnmoor.

Seven of the sketches describe the Galapagos Islands in the eastern Pacific Ocean, which Melville had seen when he was a working sailor and about which he had read in Charles Darwin’s The Voyage of the Beagle. Sailors believed that these islands were enchanted. The other three pieces are sketches of people who reside for a time in the Encantadas, mostly renegades and castaways.
