Sebastian Stan (born August 13, 1982, Constanța, Romania) is a Romanian-born American actor best known for his role as James Buchanan (“Bucky”) Barnes/The Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and television series.
Stan and his mother, pianist Georgeta Orlovschi, moved from Romania to Vienna when he was eight years old. His acting career began while in Austria, when he was cast as “Kid in Subway” in the 1994 film 71 Fragmente einer Chronologie des Zufalls (English: 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance). That year, Stan and his mother relocated to Rockland county, New York. Stan enrolled at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in theatre. His degree program included study at Rutgers Conservatory at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.
Stan began landing steady work in television and films in 2003, including with a role as a teenage sniper in an episode of Law & Order entitled “Sheltered.” He appeared in the film version of the Off-Broadway play Tony & Tina’s Wedding (2004) and in the film Red Doors (2005). In 2006 Stan appeared as Martin, a troubled gay youth, in the film drama The Architect, and as Chase, a member of a gang of teenage warlocks, in the poorly rated horror film The Covenant. In 2007 Stan had a part in Eric Bogosian’s theatrical production of Talk Radio, and starting that year he had a recurring role as Carter Baizen in the television series Gossip Girl (2007–12). Stan continued to get frequent small parts in film and television from 2007 to 2010, including a 13-episode stint in the television series Kings (2009).
Stan received his big break in 2011 when he was cast as James Buchanan (“Bucky”) Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger, starting him on the Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpole path. That led to a starring role as The Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), as well as appearances in Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and the television series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (2021). He also performed voice work in the video game Captain America: Super Soldier (2011) and two episodes of the Marvel animated series What If…? (2021).
During this period Stan also appeared in a number of films and television series, most notably The Martian (2015) alongside Matt Damon and I, Tonya (2017), as Jeff Gillooly, then husband and alleged criminal accomplice of disgraced Olympic skater Tonya Harding.
His portrayal of Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee in the Hulu television miniseries Pam & Tommy (2022) earned Stan several accolades, including an Emmy Award nomination for outstanding lead actor, a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for best actor, and a Golden Globe nomination for best performance by an actor.
