frog orchid, (Dactylorhiza viridis), (formerly Coeloglossum viride), small terrestrial orchid (family Orchidaceae), native to moist temperate areas of the Northern Hemisphere. The flowers usually are green or brownish green, occasionally tinged with red, and are each borne with a long tapering green bract. The flowers occur in spikes 5 to 30 cm (2 to 12 inches) tall and produce miniscule seeds. The plant bears three to five dark green leaves and features two tubers below ground that fork into several parts and become threadlike roots.
