Frýdek-Místek, city, northeastern Czech Republic. It lies along the Ostravice River just south of Ostrava. The town is dominated by the steeple of Frýdek Castle, which was originally a Gothic royal castle but was reconstructed during the 17th and 18th centuries. Also of interest are the twin-tower 18th-century Baroque church and the small St. Jodocus Church. The town is within the sphere of influence of the Ostrava industrial region, with coal and iron deposits in the surrounding area, and heavy industry dominates its economy. Rolled steel, machinery, and cotton textiles are the principal manufactures. Pop. (2007 est.) 59,416.
