Aleksey Kuropatkin (born March 29, 1848, Shemchurino, Pskov province, Russia—died March 23, 1925) was a Russian general. He was chief of staff during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78), commander in chief in Caucasia in 1897, and minister of war (1898–1904). In the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05) he commanded the Russian troops in Manchuria; he resigned after the Russian defeat at the Battle of Mukden (1905).
