Mahasthamaprapta
Mahasthamaprapta, in Mahayana Buddhism, a bodhisattva (“buddha-to-be”) who is most popular among the Pure Land sects. He is known as Daishizhi in China and Daiseishi in Japan. He is often depicted with the buddha Amitabha and the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. In Japanese temple banners representing Amitabha’s descent from the Western Paradise (Sukhavati), he is shown assisting the Buddha in receiving the spirits of the faithful.
