miscellany, a collection of writings on various subjects. One of the first and best-known miscellanies in English was the collection of poems by various authors published by Richard Tottel in 1557. Thereafter the miscellany became a popular form of publication, and many more appeared in the next 50 years, including The Paradise of Dainty Devices (1576), The Phoenix Nest (1593), England’s Parnassus (1600), and England’s Helicon (1600).
