Atakora Mountains, mountain range in western Africa, trending north-northeast. The range begins in the Akwapim Hills of southeastern Ghana (see Akwapim-Togo Ranges) and continues northeasterly to the Niger River through Togo and Benin. The mountains average 2,000 feet (600 metres) in height and reach their highest point at Mount Agou, 3,235 feet (986 metres), in southwestern Togo, which is also that country’s highest point.
