Nowshera, town, Kyber Pakhtunkhwa province, northern Pakistan. Lying on a sandy plain surrounded by hills, on the banks of the Kābul River (there bridged), Nowshera is a commercial and industrial centre that is connected by rail and road with Dargai (Malakand Pass), Mardan, Peshawar, and Rawalpindi. The town’s industries include cotton, wool, and paperboard mills and chemical and newsprint factories, powered by the Malakand-Dargai and Warsak hydroelectric projects. Nowshera has a government college affiliated with the University of Peshawar. Pop. (1998 prelim.) 89,428.
