San Jose, chartered city, north-central Luzon, northern Philippines. Situated in foothills near the source of the Chico River, it is a trading centre in the region known as the country’s most important rice granary. About 9 miles (15 km) east of the city is the Pantabangan Dam (1974), which provides water for local irrigation and hydroelectric power to Manila to the south.
